A Funny Definition
I once read a funny tee-shirt that said Karaoke meant “tone-deaf drunk with a microphone.”
However, Karaoke means much more than that. It means “empty orchestra.” This idea comes from Japan in the 1970s. Singers held dinner parties at places with small party rooms.
Specifically, these rooms offered private parties for people to gather and to pre-recorded tracks with lyrics displayed on a small television screens.
In the 1980s Karaoke started to really make a mark on American culture and has been going strong ever since. This fun activity is a favorite among college students and amateur singers everywhere.
What’s Our Karaoke All About?
Because Karaoke is so popular these days, we never find ourselves waiting for singers. There is usually at least one brave soul eagerly waiting for the show begin.
And once the first person sings, the ball gets rolling until it has snowballed into a full rotation with many singers waiting to sing and the crowd anticipating the next entertainer.
The great thing is that you don’t have to be the best singer to get the biggest and best cheer from the crowd. As our good friend once said, it’s all about “hanging out and having fun with your friends.”
Another very important aspect is that it allows people, both singers and listeners, to get outside themselves and enjoy sharing the beauty of music with another person, if only for 3 and 1/2 minutes.
